SUPPOSED TO FLY BY DAVID GRAFF

Released October 2018

I produced and engineered Supposed To Fly along with James Perrella. We recorded the bed tracks at Afterlife studio in Vancouver, and then moved to a home studio on Bowen Island to record the lead and background vocals and additional instruments. On the title track, Supposed To Fly, I wrote an arrangement for a string quartet, and we recorded it at Cate’s Hill Chapel on Bowen Island. This was a particularly exciting project for me, as after many decades of writing songs, it was the first full-length album recorded by my dad, David Graff. He was enthusiastic to have us do a lot of creative experimentation with the production, and the result is a very rich and varied collection of songs that crosses through many different genres.

All Along The Sea.jpg

ALL ALONG THE SEA BY CARIDWEN & GREG SPATZ

Released May 2018

Caridwen & Greg Spatz recorded these tracks at the beautiful Sage Arts studio in Arlington, Washington, with engineer Erick Jaskowiak. I was able to spend some time with them there to see the space and take some photos for the album packaging. After a couple days of recording, they handed the files off to me and I mixed and edited the record, and also designed the album cover and packaging.

GRIZZLY BEAR TOWN BY TERRI-LYNN WILLIAMS-DAVIDSON

Released August 2017

At the end of the summer in 2016, Terri-Lynn Williams-Davidson, Claire Lawrence, Bill Henderson, and I flew up to Haida Gwaii to record some of Terri-Lynn’s songs and at the same time shoot some live videos. We took a four-hour boat ride down into the Gwaii Haanas National Park, and spent three days recording in the forests and on the beaches, including the SGang Gwaay Haida Heritage Site, with just a zoom recorder, a few microphones, and some camera gear. The two songs we recorded here ended up on the album, while the rest of the tracks were recorded at Creation Studios in Vancouver. I then edited and mixed the live and studio tracks for the album.

NEW SHOES BY THE BOMBADILS

Released September 2016

I co-produced and engineered this album along with James Perrella. Shortly before Christmas in 2015, a couple on Bowen Island generously let us take over their house while they were away, and we set up a studio in their living room. Over the next two weeks, between mug cakes and Christmas tree decorating, we recorded New Shoes with Luke and Sarah of the Bombadils and a rotating cast of guest musicians. The album was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards, including Emerging Artist of the Year and Vocal Group of the year.

Tightrope Walk.jpg

TIGHTROPE WALK BY BENTALL, TAYLOR, ULRICH

Released February 2016

I co-produced and engineered Tightrope Walk along with James Perrella. We recorded the core tracks for the album live-off-the-floor over a few days with Tom, Barney, and Shari sitting facing each other in a circle in Barney’s wood-covered living room. Golden Retrievers Haddie and Tilly provided daily entertainment and inspiration, and if you’re paying attention, you might hear a background bark in one of the songs. We then took the album over to Eric Reid’s studio in North Vancouver to add some additional musicians. A few months later we all went up to Barney’s ranch near Clinton, BC, to shoot some photos for the album cover and packaging, which I designed.

Grassy Roads, Wandering Feet.jpg

GRASSY ROADS, WANDERING FEET BY THE BOMBADILS

Released March 2015

Towards the beginning of my second and final year in the Master of Music in Sound Recording program at McGill University, the Bombadils (then Sarah Frank, Luke Fraser, Anh Phung, and Alan Mackie, also students in the music department at the time) asked if I wanted to help them record their second album. Along with James Perrella, we recorded it over the next semester, getting studio time whenever we could, which usually meant some very late nights and early mornings in everything from a tiny studio to a huge soundstage. With the full collection of microphones and gear owned by the Sound Recording program at our disposal, we were able to do a lot of experimentation, and learned a lot about what sounded best on their individual voices and instruments.

Everywhere I Go.jpg

EVERYWHERE I GO BY SHARI ULRICH

Released March 2014

During my first year in the Master of Music in Sound Recording program at McGill University, one of our final assignments was the “production project” which involved producing and engineering a full-length album for an artist. I asked my mom - singer-songwriter Shari Ulrich - if she’d like to take advantage of this opportunity to record her next album. She came out to Montreal and we recorded the album in the studios and concert halls of the McGill Music building. With the wealth of musical talent in the music school, we were able to have a lot of fun with the instrumentation, which included two string quartet arrangements and a five-piece French horn arrangement. The album was nominated for two Canadian Folk Music Awards, including Solo Artist of the Year and Songwriter of the Year.
